Police Application FAQs

Below is a list of our most frequently asked questions.

We endeavour to ensure you are completely happy with our products, so should you have a query that is not listed, please feel free to ask us a question.

1. Money Back Guarantee (Application Form Checking Service Only)

In the very unlikely event that your application form does not meet the competency standard we will offer you a full refund. A refund will not be given if you are rejected for any other reason other than your form did not meet the required competency standard.

We reserve the right to request a copy of your rejection letter to confirm that you were rejected for competency reasons.

2. Ministry of Defence (MOD) Firearms Assessment

The firearms test consists of you handling an unloaded MP7 handgun and they teach you a simple drill with it; they are simply looking to see if you can follow instructions for safe handling of the gun and that you get the hang of moving the parts of the gun. Easy!

It also gives you the opportunity to see if they really want a career where they will be carrying a gun 70% of the time.

3. What if I attend an assessment centre and do not meet the necessary standard?

Forces have slightly differing pass marks, so although you may not have met your chosen force standard, it is possible that another force would still appoint you.

Most forces have a 60% requirement, however there are a few forces that only require 50% or 55%. So if you did not meet the 60% requirement that your chosen force requires, but scored 50% or more, you simply need to contact other forces and see if they will consider your scores. Most, if they are currently recruiting will accept a transfer.

4. What if I am really poor at Maths, can I still be appointed?

The simple answer is yes. The maths exam only accounts for 2.5% of all marks available - 1 x A grade (3 marks). This means that even if you do not answer a single question correctly you can still be appointed with a maximum overall score of 97.5%. There is NO pass marks for the maths.

5. What happens if I do not pass my assessment centre?

In the very unlikely event that you do not meet the standard of the police service, we guarantee you a free course/s until you do meet the standard. Because over 90% of our clients meet the required standard, we can offer this guarantee. Clearly we are in business and would not make any money if all we were doing is offering free courses time and time again.

6. What makes our courses different from others?

There are many differences between providers, the most obvious is the professionalism of the course tutors and their police background. Our courses are run by David Vidgen, an award winning police recruitment expert who spent nearly six years working in police recruitment. Most other providers are run by ex police officers whom have never actually worked in a police recruitment dept and don't really know how things work. Of course they have some idea, but their lack of knowledge is obvious when it comes to asking questions regarding eligibility, financial and convictions criteria.

Another key difference between ourselves and other providers is the success rate of our students. While others may claim to be successful and say 8 out of 10 pass, if they are that successful, why are their websites so short of success stories? Our students cry out to tell us when they are successful, this is obvious when you look at the number of course reviews we receive.

Some of the other differences are:

1) We only run courses with a maximum of 8 persons. More than this and your individual needs will not be met.

2) We only perform practice role-play exercises on a 1 to 1 basis with the course tutor. They are not undertaken in front of a group, because of course this is not required on your real assessment day.

3) If it's not a Police Application course, then it's not a genuine Police Application course.

7. How soon is it best to take a course before my assessment centre?

Ideally, we recommend that you attend at least 2-3 weeks prior to your police assessment centre date. This will then give us time to develop your skills and work on any areas that need improvement.

Although, we have had candidates who have attended sessions and have successfully passed their assessment centre the following day. People have different learning styles, while one person would prefer to attend with lots of notice so they can practice and practice, there are others whom prefer being taught just a few days beforehand - so the information is fresh in their minds.

8. Which sections of the assessment centre are more important than others?

All sections of the assessment centre day are important, however the role-play, written and interview exercises account for 95% of the marks available. With just 2.5% for the Numerical Reasoning and 2.5% for the Verbal Logical Reasoning.

All sections of the assessment day are covered on our 1-day and one-to-one courses. However, the majority of coaching is focused on the three areas that account for 95% of the marks (role-play, written and interview), as your success in these areas will determine your appointment.

Much to popular belief there is no pass mark for the Maths exam. Because it only accounts for 2.5% of all marks, you don't have to answer a single question and you can still get a maximum score of 97.5%.

9. How many students are present on a 1-day group course

No more than a maximum 8 persons are present on our 1-day group courses*. This number is strictly limited because we want to ensure that you receive individual attention - this includes the opportunity to practice role-play exercises on a one-to-one basis (not in front of a group).

*Excludes Masterclass sessions.

10. Do I receive after course support?

If you book a one-to-one or 1-day group course you receive unlimited after course support at no extra charge.

11. Why choose Police Application?

Police Application is owned and run by David Vidgen, having spent nearly six years working for West Midlands Police in the Police and PCSO recruitment department helping some 6000 employees secure jobs in all aspects of police work. I am completely familiar and have first hand experience with the National Police Competency Framework (the skills you need) in order to be successful.

It’s ironic, but one thing we found having worked for such a large force is the number of candidates who seek advice from serving Police Officers about how to join. The vast majority of these candidates end up failing because most Police Officers DO NOT know and have no experience of the current recruitment process. If you want Police Recruitment advice you talk to an expert about how to join the job (that’s us). If you want to find out what it’s like being a Police Officer, then you talk to a Police Officer.

WARNING: Trained Police Assessors are forbidden to talk to candidates about the exercises and how to pass the police assessment centre. Candidates who are coached by such people can be forced to resign and apply again.

The lesson here is to talk to the EXPERTS. 90% of all our students are successful at their respective stages of the recruitment process.

13. Workbook

Our workbook contains sample police role-play, written proposal and interview exercises. The role-play exercises have been designed to help you understand how the role-play works, what to expect and what skills you should be showing in order to meet the competencies. The role-play section includes two sample exercises, both include the role-actor scripts so you can practice at home, and the marking guides to see how you scored.

The written proposal section contains two sample role-play exercises 1) Controversial Event 2) Festive Shopping - both have been designed to be similar to the real exercises and require you to demonstrate the same competencies.

This is the only workbook on the market containing role-play and written proposals that are similar to the real exercises.
